Aesculapius versus Hermes

The Staff of Aesulapius has been the symbol of healing since Greek Mythology. The single snake was the helper of Aesculapius and people would come to the temple and sleep overnight. They would be ministered to by the snake and awaken healed in the morning.

The Cadeusus, or staff of Mercury with two snakes was the symbol for messengers, merchants and thieves. Mercury was the messenger who arranged affairs for the Greek Goddesses. It only became used as the symbol of medicine in the second world war when it was used on ambulances to indicate speedy service.
